Access to the ranch from Saratoga is by county roads to the north boundary, then by private road to the current headquarters. The Saratoga airport, Shively Field, is used extensively by the largest of private jets and is one of the busiest in Wyoming. Commercial service is available one hour from the ranch via Interstate 80 in Laramie, Wyoming. Laramie is home to Wyoming's only four-year university, offering great cultural and sporting events in a town of 27,000. The local hometown, Elk Mountain, has a wonderful café, convenience store, post office, schools and the Elk Mountain Hotel, which offers a gourmet menu to its guests. Local color can always be observed and heard here in this tiny mountain hamlet. Water, Wildlife and the Basin Lands: The Palm-Basin Ranch is suitably named, as it controls the Pass Creek Basin leading up into the huge expanse of national forest lands. The Basin Ranch (consisting of almost 19 sections of deeded land) is framed by the Snowy Range and Medicine Bow Peak (12,013 feet) to the south, and Kennaday Peak (10,800 feet) and Pennock Mountain (9,965 feet with the ranch deeded lands running nearly to the top) to the west. The area's namesake - Elk Mountain (11,156 feet) - stands alone to the north. True to its name, the Basin is a mountain hideaway in a bowl full of streams, trees, excellent mountain vistas and wildlife.
There are numerous creeks that flow down from the Medicine Bow National Forest and the Snowy Range to form Pass Creek. The high mountain basin backs up against twelve miles of national forest boundary, then slopes down in elevation to the north as these streams collect into Pass Creek, which provide several miles of great fishing. Little Pass Creek and numerous other creeks provide additional fishing waters. Large brook trout and an occasional rainbow populate Pass Creek and the smaller streams. Several beaver ponds are located on the streams and the Ranch has a small lake that had been stocked with fish in years past. Already a wonderful fishery, the Basin provides outstanding opportunities to develop additional fisheries due to the outstanding water resources that are available. One could spend many years enjoying the Basin's abundant waters.
The Basin Ranch is a true wildlife paradise, widely known to locals and wildlife enthusiasts throughout the region as harboring the best elk population in the area. Trophy class bulls have been taken from the ranch. In addition, numerous antelope can be found on the property along with mule deer and moose. The Snowy Range is the most recent area in Wyoming to offer moose hunting, with several Boone & Crocket class bulls harvested in 2002. Waterfowl frequent the ranch as summer nesting residents and migratory flocks pass through in the fall.
The elevation of the ranch ranges from 7,600' along Pass Creek to 8,800' on the east slope of Pennock Mountain. According to the Natural Resource Conservation Service, the annual precipitation for the area is 20" to 25" (30-year average).
